Workers pumped water from flooded subway stations and apartment complexes today as Tropical Storm Nari dumped more rain on Taiwan. The death toll from landslides and floods rose to 32.
Typhoons and tropical storms usually sweep over Taiwan in a day, but Nari--which hit northern Taiwan early Monday--refused to leave, becoming the longest-lasting tropical storm in recorded Taiwan history.
Nari lingered over central Taiwan this morning, at times staying in the same spot for hours. Offices, schools and the stock exchange were closed for a second day.
Several cities recorded up to 32 inches of rain in a day, about one-third the average annual rainfall.
