The United Nations compound in New York was evacuated because of an unidentified threat to the complex relayed by U.S. authorities, a U.N. spokesman said.
Some sources said it was a bomb threat, but spokesman Fred Eckhard would not confirm that.
Later, the General Assembly--meeting for the first time in its 56th session--postponed indefinitely a major summit on the well-being and protection of the world’s children. The conference, organized by UNICEF, the U.N. Children’s Fund, was scheduled for Sept. 19-21 in New York. More than 75 presidents and prime ministers had been set to attend.
