European Union foreign ministers declared Friday a Europe-wide day of mourning to honor the victims of the terror attacks in the U.S., British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told reporters in Brussels.
He said the ministers, meeting in emergency session, were asking citizens across the 15-nation bloc to observe three minutes of silence Friday in a gesture of solidarity with Europe’s guardian ally.
A draft statement called for urgent meetings of EU interior, justice and transport ministers to step up security measures at airports and public buildings and on public transport across Europe.
