The sculpture exhibition of two Los Angeles artists at Chapman University’s Guggenheim Gallery brings high art down to day-to-day realities. Stephen Shackleford modifies everyday objects, such as chaise lounge chairs, shopping carts and houseplants, with low-tech mechanical devices, such as stereo speakers and water pumps, to produce quirky, new objects. Paul Cherwick’s cast of animals and anthromorphs look at classical sculpture with the artist’s touch of beauty and absurdity.
Featuring sculptors Stephen Shackleford and Paul Cherwick, Guggenheim Gallery, Chapman University, 1 University Drive, Orange. Reception: Tuesday, Sept. 25, 7-9 p.m. Gallery hours: Monday-Friday, 12-5 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Free. Ends Oct. 3. (714) 997-6729.
