From Times Wire Reports
Smiling and wiping away tears, elderly Russian survivors of Nazi-era slave labor were called one by one to receive their first compensation payments from Germany at a Moscow ceremony.
Across the country, 2,000 survivors began getting their payments after years of waiting. They are due as much as $6,500 per person but initially will receive only half the amount. The remainder is to be paid out only after the total number of recipients is determined.
Russian survivors are to receive $360 million out of a $4.7-billion German fund.
