Celebrity Gynecologist Gets 7 Years for Fraud

Dr. Niels Lauersen, a gynecologist whose clients included singer Celine Dion and Geraldo Rivera’s wife, was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison for duping insurance companies into paying for fertility treatments.

Lauersen, 64, sought leniency based on his claim that he committed fraud only to help women conceive. Voicing support, TV personality Rivera has referred to him as the “dyno gyno.”

U.S. District Judge William Pauley in New York, however, said Lauersen engaged in “garden variety fraud.” It was the doctor’s second trial on the charges. The first ended in March when a jury was unable to reach a verdict.
