Replica of Fence Will Honor Slain Gay Man
- Share via
City officials will erect a replica of the wooden fence that college student Matthew Shepard was lashed to three years ago near Laramie, Wyo., in a ceremony today at Santa Monica and Crescent Heights boulevards.
Shepard, a 21-year-old freshman, died from a beating by attackers who targeted him because he was gay.
Activists for gay and human rights issues will participate in the ceremony at 11:30 a.m. to promote tolerance.
“Hatred for another based on nothing but racism, homophobia, nationalism or religious bigotry leads to such violence,” said one of the event’s organizers, City Councilman Steve Martin.
