Man Denies Close Bond With Atta
WASHINGTON — An Indonesian man charged with document fraud knew Mohamed Atta because the two attended the same mosque in Germany, but he had not seen the suspected hijacker since coming to the U.S., his lawyer said Friday.
Immigration lawyer Ivan Yacub said his client, Agus Budiman, knew Atta by the alias Mohamed Al-Amir. Budiman and Atta attended the same mosque in Hamburg, Germany, but the two were not close friends, Yacub said.
Budiman came to the U.S. in October 2000, according to a criminal complaint. He is being charged with helping another man obtain a driver’s license.
