Stop Terrorism at the Borders
Re “Tighter Borders Worldwide Make Political Asylum an Elusive Goal,” Oct. 31: Why in the world is The Times publicizing the plight of a Sudanese man who wants to win political asylum in the U.S. but has so far only achieved asylum in Mexico? The man was persecuted not by his own government but by black Christian rebels in the south of Sudan who are rebelling against the Muslim slavers who run the government of that country. All Hussein Karim had to do to ensure his safety was to move to northern Sudan. It’s ridiculous that any outside country would consider giving him asylum.

Policies announced by Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft boggle the mind (“Justice Officials Introduce Tighter Immigrant Policy,” Nov. 1). Why should anyone be accepted into the U.S. on a visa from a state which, according to our State Department, sponsors terrorism? Why is there not a temporary ban on new visas until the INS is able to develop a database to account for those already in the country?
Political correctness has taken a heavy toll. From his defense of racial preferences in the Adarand Constructors vs. Mineta case presently being argued before the Supreme Court to his tepid new immigration guidelines, Ashcroft is one such casualty.
