Merchant Marine Vets Protest War Memorial
Times Staff and Wire Reports
A handful of merchant marine veterans protested the dedication of a privately funded World War II memorial on Monday, saying they felt slighted that the monument doesn’t honor their service.
Several mariners wearing black armbands stood quietly during the dedication at the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael.
The protesters are angry that the monument honors “All Who Served,” mentioning four branches of the military but not the merchant marine. The $70,000 memorial was funded by a private veterans group and approved by the Board of Supervisors.
