We’re Still Awaiting Results From Nagano
This is another example of executives thinking they know what the viewers want. We understand the taping of the Summer Olympics from Sydney, but tape delay of the Winter Olympics for the West Coast is ridiculous.
The Olympics should be live whenever possible. We feel sorry for the athletes who have trained years for the Olympics and their triumphs and tragedies will be edited for advertisers and time constraints. We also feel sorry for the young children (future Olympians) who are not allowed to stay up until 11:30 p.m. to watch the events.

The answer to the tape-delay vs. live problem with the 2002 Olympics seems so simple: Do both. Why doesn’t NBC broadcast the Games live from 8-11 p.m. EDT all over the country, and then leave it to the discretion of West Coast affiliates to rebroadcast them immediately afterward? That way everybody wins.
