PITCHERS

DAVID HUFF; EDISON; SO.

Pitched a two-hit shutout in Edison’s Division II championship-game victory over Riverside Poly. He finished 8-2 with five complete games, three saves and a 1.56 ERA.

DAN REID; VILLA PARK; SR.

Reid, who is headed to UCLA, had another stellar season, finishing with an 8-2 record, 1.72 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 73 innings.

KYLE ALLEN; TRABUCO HILLS; SR.

Provided the pitching the Mustangs needed to make their first appearance in a playoff semifinal. Finished 11-2 with a 2.32 ERA and 107 strikeouts.

FRANK McLAUGHLIN; CAPISTRANO VALLEY; SR.

Won his second consecutive start in a Division I championship game at Dodger Stadium. Finished 9-2 with a 1.89 ERA.

FIRST BASEMAN

RAULY GUTIERREZ; TROY; JR.

Set a school record with 11 doubles and hit .469 with five home runs and 28 RBIs. “Never takes a bad swing, never seems to get fooled,” Troy Coach Dane Ilertsen said.

INFIELDERS

CHRIS FIELDER; ALISO NIGUEL; SR.

An integral part of Aliso Niguel’s success, hitting .418 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs.

MATT WILKERSON; SANTA MARGARITA; SR.

The UC Santa Barbara-bound Wilkerson almost always made the tough plays at third base and hit .418 with 11 doubles, six home runs and 28 RBIs.

SERGIO SANTOS; MATER DEI; JR.

Santos had 18 steals in 19 attempts and hit .448 with 23 RBIs and 43 runs scored. He also helped turn five double plays.

OUTFIELDERS

MATT STONE; UNIVERSITY; JR.

Supplemented the heavy-hitting Jay Nichols in the Trojan lineup. Stone batted .454 with one home run and 27 RBIs and had 26 stolen bases.

ZACK SWANSON; CYPRESS; JR.

A steadying force for a Centurion team that reached the quarterfinal round of the Division III playoffs. Hit .414 with six home runs, 10 doubles and 26 RBIs.

A.J. MARTINEZ; EDISON; JR.

Set a school record with 29 stolen bases and scored from second base on a double squeeze in Edison’s championship-game victory. Hit .424 for the season with 13 RBIs.

CATCHER

JON DE VRIES; IRVINE; SR.

Strong arm and steady bat--he hit .449 with six home runs and 26 RBIs--were so attractive that the Boston Red Sox selected him in the third round of the amateur draft.

DESIGNATED HITTER

JEFF JONES; SUNNY HILLS; JR.

Provided a bright spot for the Lancers during a down season, hitting .526 with five home runs, 13 doubles, 35 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

UTILITY

HECTOR AMBRIZ; VALENCIA; JR.

Was indispensable, even though he played the last six weeks of the season with a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The first baseman/pitcher hit .389 with four home runs and 26 RBIs. He also went 6-3 with a 1.71 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings.
