SUSANVILLE — A guard at High Desert State Prison was in critical condition Monday with multiple skull fractures after an inmate attack, prison officials said.
The 4,293 inmates at the maximum-security prison near Susanville remained locked in their cells after the incident.
Officer Karen Fobes, 43, was in intensive care at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. She was taken there by helicopter after she was attacked about 3:30 p.m. Sunday by 25-year-old Damon Deshawn Evans, who balked at returning to his cell after a shower, officials said.
