Councilman Wants Ban on ‘Big-Box’ Food Stores
A council member wants the city to consider restricting so-called “big-box” grocery stores--large retail chains such as Walmart and Target that devote portions of their stores to selling food.
Chris Mears said he will ask the city staff at today’s council session to study the issue and prepare a report with recommendations.
“What they do is destroy competition from smaller grocery outlets--which is to say almost every other kind of grocery outlet--by being able to offer significant price reductions on the grocery items they offer,” he said.
Mears estimated that 900 grocery workers live in Irvine.
Today’s City Council meeting starts at 5 p.m. in council chambers, 1 Civic Center Plaza.
