La Quinta Golfer Wins Junior World Title
Anthony Kim of La Quinta shot a final-round 72 Friday at Torrey Pines in La Jolla and won the boys’ 15-17 division of the Junior World Championship.
Kim had a four-day total of 72-65-69-72--278, two shots better than Prom Meesawat of Thailand and James Renner of Plainville, Mass.
Eileen Vargas of Columbia shot 71-72-71-73--287 and won the girls’ title by a shot over Nicole Perrot of Chile.
* Michael Block of Palm Desert shot 69-67-68-71--275 and won the California State Open at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club. Block, who won $4,500, finished three shots ahead of Matthew Lane of Agoura.
* Steve Mena of Long Beach shot two 69s Friday at La Jolla Country Club and has a one-shot lead in the Southern California Amateur Championship.
John Pate of Santa Barbara, brother of PGA Tour player Steve Pate, shot 66-73 and is in second. There are 23 players within eight shots of Mena with two rounds to play.
