Davis Aides Sue Over Names of Ad Supporters
Gov. Gray Davis’ campaign team filed suit Friday to ferret out the identity of financial backers for a slate of TV commercials attacking the governor over his handling of the energy crisis.
The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, alleges that the American Taxpayers Alliance is operating a political campaign, and thus is required to disclose details about its organizational structure and financial contributors.
The Washington-based group, one of several out-of-state outfits that have run ads critical of Davis in recent weeks, considers the ads issue-oriented and therefore exempt under state law from the reporting requirements.
