Rettenmaier Wins Junior Sectional Tournament
Travis Rettenmaier of Fountain Valley overpowered top-seeded Doug Stewart of Malibu, 6-1, 6-1, to win the boys’ 18 singles championship Sunday in the Southern California Junior Sectional Tennis Championships at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club.
Top-seeded Jack Li of Irvine defeated No. 2-seeded Jamil Al-Agba of Camarillo, 7-5, 6-3, to win the boys’ 16 title. Seventh-seeded Kaes Van’t Hof routed second-seeded Samuel Tadevosian, 6-1, 6-3, to win the boys’ 14 title.
No. 1-seeded Iris Ichim of Beverly Hills rallied to overcome Kim-Ahn Nguyen of Orange, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5, for the girls’ 18 championship. Kady Pooler of Laguna Niguel defeated Ivana King of Long Beach, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, in girls’ 16s.
Brea’s Cosmina Ciobanu won the girls’ 14 title when the chair umpire defaulted Karina Porushkevich of Los Angeles for swatting a ball in frustration that hit Ciobanu. Ciobanu was leading, 6-1, 1-1.
Because the ball struck a player, the action was considered “abuse,” whether or not Porushkevich intended to hit Ciobanu or not, Ryan said, and was grounds for an automatic penalty default according to USTA rules.
