Life without a point guard was supposed to be difficult for North Hollywood (10-4), but the Huskies have won five consecutive games with senior Nathan Stern playing the position.
Stern, usually a shooting guard, has committed only 10 turnovers in the last eight games.
“He’s been the key,” Coach Rob Bloom said.
North Hollywood lost starting point guard Dominic Johnson when he transferred to Crenshaw. Opponents figured pressure defense would disrupt the Huskies, but Stern has passed the test, just like he did on his SAT. He scored 1570.

Lance Broadus, a 6-3 sophomore, was a top linebacker for Taft’s football team. The Toreadors have discovered he can play basketball, too.
Broadus received playing time during holiday break because several Taft players were on vacation. Coach Derrick Taylor could find it difficult to remove Broadus from the lineup after he had games of 17 and 12 rebounds.
“He’s a stud,” Taylor said.
Taft (11-4) is still awaiting word if starting center Ezeuka Collins will return from a family trip to Nigeria. He left a week before school let out, has missed 10 games and wasn’t at school Monday.

Paraclete (4-6) is relying on two underclassmen to remain competitive in the Alpha League. Junior guard Drew Gill is averaging 25.3 points and sophomore forward Matt Marquez is averaging 16.3.
