Fire Causes $85,000 Damage to School

Firefighters extinguished flames in the auditorium attic at Melvin Avenue Elementary School on Monday afternoon, Los Angeles city fire officials said.
No one was hurt or evacuated during the 12:30 p.m. fire at the school at 7700 Melvin Ave., said department spokesman Brian Humphrey. It took 70 firefighters about an hour to put out the flames, he said.
The fire caused about $85,000 in damage, and the cause was being investigated, Humphrey said.
