Mexico Sets Increase for Minimum Wage

Mexico will increase its $3.80-a-day minimum wage by 4.5% to 7% next year depending on workers’ geographic region, the Labor Ministry said.
About 20% of Mexico’s 40-million strong work force receives one of three minimum salaries that start at $3.80 and vary by a few cents a day based on the higher or lower costs of living in different parts of the country.
Starting Tuesday, workers who make the lowest minimum wage--or about half of all of those workers who receive the minimum wage--will get the highest wage increase, bringing their daily remuneration around $4.20.
An additional 30%--including workers who earn minimum wage in Mexico City--will receive the smallest wage increase of 4.5% and earn $4.60 a day.
The remainder of workers will receive a raise of 5.7%, which will bring their salaries to $4.40 a day.
