Homeless by Choice, Not by Circumstance

I am a “road tramp” (by choice) who read your editorials about homelessness with interest (Nov. 18-22). While I appreciate the effort that is being made, the idea of forcing people off the streets is almost as horrible as the political agenda Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft is trying to hide behind in this war on terrorism.
I am not mentally ill or on drugs. I dislike the streets just as I dislike the condos and apartments many call home. My home is in nature. Still, it frightens me to think that I, or my acquaintances, could be dragged off and drugged for lack of a house.
Social desirability does not give one the right to ignore the rights of others, especially under the facade of “helping the helpless.” There are many of us on the streets capable of making our own decisions and helping ourselves and others in a peaceful, non-harming way.
