SOUTHERN SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDUP
La Quinta 21, Fontana Kaiser 10--Frederick Collins scored two touchdowns to lead the Blackhawks to the Division VIII championship at Fontana High.
Collins, who rushed 166 yards in 26 carries, put the game out of reach when he scored on a five-yard with 9:52 left after La Quinta (13-0-1) recovered a Kaiser fumble at its own 40.
Blackhawk quarterback Sammy Chavez, who had only completed three passes in the first half, found his rhythm in the second half.
He finished having completed nine of 19 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown, with one interception.
The touchdown pass play, to Nick Huff, covered 26 yards. And it came after he connected with Ivan Davalos for a 54-yard gain.
“After his big pass plays we got more confident,” Collins said. “That’s when I think the momentum shifted.”
Kaiser (12-2) took a 7-0 lead on a one-yard run by Kevin Mafua in the first quarter.
La Quinta tied the score in the second quarter on a six-yard run by Collins.
Kaiser’s only other score came on a 29-yard field Fortino Amancio. Allen Wade paced the Cats, rushing for 60 yards in 11 carries.
