When Martha Jones planned a winter trip to New York, the last thing she expected was a sunburn. Jones, who said temperatures were nearly freezing Wednesday when she left Ontario, Canada, was among thousands of tourists on hand at balmy Rockefeller Plaza.
The National Weather Service said temperatures hit 69 in Central Park, breaking the record set in 1962.
Many cities broke records. Philadelphia hit 70 degrees, breaking the previous high of 68 set in 1908. The temperature topped out at 66 in Portland, Maine, besting 1962’s record of 62. The mercury in Wilmington, Del., climbed to 71 degrees, breaking the 1933 record high of 68 degrees.
