Mine Blast Toll at 47 as Rescuers Give Up Search

Rescuers gave up all hope of finding 10 Ukrainian coal miners trapped by a weekend explosion and fire deep below ground.
That brought the death toll to 47 in the blast at Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. The first funerals were held Tuesday, and the government declared a national day of mourning.
A methane and coal-dust blast ripped through a shaft at the Zasyadko mine Sunday. Thirty-six bodies were recovered, and one of the 44 injured died Tuesday. Eight more remain in critical condition.
