Tigers Tie Mark With 13-Run Ninth
The Detroit Tigers tied a modern major-league record by scoring 13 runs in the ninth inning, and Damion Easley got six hits to match a club feat last accomplished by Ty Cobb, in a 19-6 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night at Arlington, Texas.
The Tigers equaled the post-1900 record for the most runs in a ninth inning. The Angels did it against Texas on Sept. 14, 1978.
Shane Halter hit a grand slam and a run-scoring double, Randall Simon hit a bases-loaded triple and Deivi Cruz homered in the big inning. Simon homered earlier in the game and finished with five runs batted in.
Easley went six for six, including a home run. Cobb had six hits on May 25, 1925 and Bill Nance accomplished the feat on July 13, 1901.
Detroit improved to 8-0 against the Rangers this season.
With the score tied, 6-6, Rob Fick was hit by a pitch from Mike Venafro (4-4) leading off the Detroit ninth. Bobby Higginson followed with a double to left and Tony Clark was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Simon followed with his triple. Halter doubled home a run and scored on Easley’s single for an 11-6 lead. Cruz hit a two-run homer off Brandon Villafuerte and RBI singles by pinch-hitter Ryan Jackson and Simon made it 15-6. Halter followed with a grand slam.
Venafro was the loser for the second consecutive night. He has failed to retire 10 batters over the last two games against the Tigers.
