Australia Reaffirms Supremacy With Gold
Australia reinforced its status as the greatest women’s field hockey side in history with a 3-1 victory over Argentina in the gold-medal match.
Inspired by brilliant play from former captain Rechelle Hawkes, Claire Mitchell-Taverner and Nikki Hudson, Australia earned its third consecutive Olympic title.
It was also the perfect send-off for retiring Coach Ric Charlesworth, who has overseen an unprecedented era of success in the last six years.
Playing in her fourth Olympics, Hawkes joined swimmer Dawn Fraser and equestrian Andrew Hoy as the only Australians to have won three gold medals.
The Netherlands beat Spain, 2-0, in the bronze medal playoff.
