Campbell Sparks Ocean View’s Victory

Ocean View’s Patrick Campbell passed for two touchdowns and intercepted two passes, returning one for a 62-yard touchdown, to lead the Seahawks to a 29-7 victory over Costa Mesa Friday night at Newport Harbor High.
The Seahawks (3-1) forced seven Costa Mesa turnovers, and held the Mustangs (3-1) to one second-quarter touchdown. Costa Mesa entered the game averaging 41.3 points in their first three games.
The Mustangs scored first on a one-yard touchdown run by Keola Asuega with 7:58 left in the second quarter. Ocean View scored just before halftime on a five-yard touchdown pass from Campbell to Phillip Smith. From that point, it was all Ocean View.
A 25-yard field goal by Rick Sweetin gave Ocean View a 10-7 lead in the third quarter, and the Seahawks pummeled the Mustangs with three fourth-quarter touchdowns in a span of 7 minutes 30 seconds. Jason Rhoads, who rushed for 93 yards in the final quarter, scored the clinching touchdown on a one-yard run with 9:19 left.
Campbell hooked up again with Smith on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 2:38 left. It was Smith’s 10th catch of the night for 138 yards. Campbell capped his night with a 62-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Asuega led the way for the Mustangs with 135 yards in 29 carries.
