Women on Top With New Albums
If it’s time for a new nickname for L.A., how about the Valley of the Divas? The new Southern California album sales chart reflects a fondness for female singers of three distinct generations, with new albums from Barbra Streisand and Bjork (No. 14 in the region) and the Spanish-language debut of Christina Aguilera (No. 17 locally) all selling here at a much higher rate than they are nationally. It’s no place for country, though: George Strait entered the national chart at No. 7 but barely made the Top 20 in the Southland, at No. 19.
