WASHINGTON — Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers and House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas) met Thursday to stake out positions on tax cut measures that will likely be part of a final budget package that lawmakers are pressing to complete.
Summers and Armey spoke briefly with reporters after the meeting. The two declined to give details.
Republicans who control Congress hope to get a package that includes some bills that have already passed the House, including tax breaks to encourage more retirement savings and to spur business development in poor rural and urban areas.
Congress is pushing to complete a budget package and adjourn by mid-October so lawmakers can campaign before Nov. 7 elections.
