Insight magazine, a publication of the Washington Times Corp., has named Thomas Aquinas College one of the top colleges in the nation.
Thomas Aquinas College, a Roman Catholic school in Santa Paula, is one of 15 colleges listed in the Oct. 2-9 issue of the conservative magazine. The campus, which serves about 280 students, offers a rigorous curriculum based on medieval education. The students read Homer and Plato during their freshman year and Albert Einstein and Leo Tolstoy in their senior year.
Founded in 1971, the college admitted 85 freshmen this fall whose SAT scores averaged 1,260 out of a total 1,600, school officials said.
The schools were chosen based on dedication of the teachers, quality of the campus, presence of a student-aid program and the percentage of students who go on to pursue advanced degrees. The only other California campus named is Claremont McKenna College.
