Spain Has to Settle for a Royal Deadlock
With Prince Felipe and Princess Cristina watching, Spain’s Manuel Estiarte nearly showed why he’s the king of Olympic water polo.
Estiarte, playing his sixth and last Olympics, barely missed his third goal with one second left in Spain’s 7-7 tie with Australia. Estiarte, watched by the children of Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, raised his Olympic scoring record to 123. Spain finished 2-2-1 and will play Croatia in Friday’s quarterfinal.
Salvador Gomez’s goal gave the Spanish team a 5-4 lead, and Jordi Sans put it ahead 6-5 three minutes later. Australian captain Daniel Marsden answered both times.
