Two Cypress College students were awarded scholarships from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for their record of academics and community service.
Vernecia Grimes and Monica Verma, who are among 400 college students selected to receive the scholarships, were awarded $1,000 each.
Grimes, a student since 1998, has served as the school’s Black Student Union president and is in training to become a youth pastor. She plans to transfer to Cal State Long Beach, where she attended dental assisting classes over the summer.
Verma is the college’s Associated Students president and plans to transfer to USC to earn a bachelor’s degree in business. She has been involved in a number of service activities, including Red Ribbon Week and blood drives.
