Terry William Boyle; Promoted Art Films
Terry William Boyle, 56, who worked to show classic, art and foreign films throughout Southern California. A native of Beloit, Wis., Boyle was intrigued with movie theaters from his teens, when he worked for them in the Kansas City area. In California, he helped launch San Diego’s Fashion Valley four-plex, and in Santa Barbara, he made two older theaters he managed, the Riviera and the Arlington, showplaces for first-run foreign films. At the Riviera, he established theme nights, showing films by one director or with one star, or illustrating a cult. In Los Angeles, he managed Little Tokyo Cinemas, which showed Japanese-language films. There, too, Boyle organized theme nights, such as a retrospective on films by director Akira Kurosawa. Seeing a likely market for theaters presenting such fare in the Westside, Boyle helped develop the Goldwyn Pavilion Cinemas as an art house. Boyle also worked on film-related marketing and advertising campaigns. On Thursday in Los Angeles.
