The engineering’s been done. Now, proponents of Balboa Peninsula’s revitalization are beginning to hone in on designing pedestrian-friendly streets around the Balboa Pavilion and hope to break ground on the project within a year.
“The hope is that if the city makes an investment in the area, private property owners will be likely to make an investment, too,” said Assistant City Manager Sharon Z. Wood, adding that about $7.5 million is budgeted for the project.
But looking over colorful drawings of a palm tree-lined Palm Street and a cobblestone paved Washington Street, Councilman Tod W. Ridgeway said that maintaining the area after a comprehensive face lift won’t be cheap.
An Oct. 10 City Council study session is planned to present the project to the full council.
