Re Bill Carroll’s letter questioning Bill Maher’s libertarian credentials (Sept. 3):

Sometimes I wonder if I am an officer in a political party or a cult when I read comments like Carroll’s. Most libertarians are tolerant and open-minded, yet many people who identify themselves with the Libertarian Party act like gatekeepers to a rigid way of thinking. The fact that Maher may not get 100% on Carroll’s scorecard doesn’t mean he isn’t a libertarian.

If anyone is looking to find truly peaceful voluntary solutions to the many problems we face today, I consider them an ally in our quest to make a better society.
