Canyons Is Surprised by Moorpark
Ray Carmel’s 96-yard kickoff return down the right sideline with 4:34 left gave Moorpark College a 31-26 upset of College of the Canyons in a Western State Conference Northern Division game Saturday night at Moorpark.
Carmel’s return came 22 seconds after Tommy Garagliano kicked a 45-yard field goal to give Canyons (6-1, 3-1 in conference play) a 26-24 lead.
There were nine lead changes in the game.
The Raiders (5-2, 4-0) took a 24-21 lead early in the fourth quarter when Tim Bird threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jason Bolding.
Steve Smith of Canyons rushed for 81 yards in 19 carries and scored on runs of four and five yards. He left the game early in the fourth quarter with an injured knee.
Also for Canyons, which was ranked No. 4 in state JC polls and No. 2 in Southern California, Travis Winn completed nine of 14 passes for 152 passes, including a 23-yard touchdown to Stephen Stokes for Canyons, which was ranked No. 4 in the state.
