These days it seems every kicker has a soccer background.
But that is not the case at Calabasas, where Justin Shagrin is closing in on school records.
Shagrin, who has never played soccer, has converted six of eight field goals this season, one shy of the school record. Damon McClaren kicked seven in 1995 and David Rosenberg matched the record in 1998.
“He’s got a leg,” Coach Larry Edwards said.
Shagrin, who booted all seven kickoffs into the end zone two weeks ago against El Camino Real, just missed on a 58-yard attempt against Verdugo Hills earlier in the season.
It was wide, not short. Believing in the strength of Shagrin’s leg, the game-plan is simple when the Coyotes get into their opponents’ territory.
“When we cross the 50 [yard line], we don’t punt anymore,” Edwards said.
