15 Missing After Landslide Hits Village

A landslide swept through a small village in the southern Swiss Alps close to the Italian border, and 15 people were missing, police said. The avalanche of mud and rock, which followed days of heavy rain, swept away several buildings in Gondo, including a restaurant and the village hall, and destroyed about a third of the village of 200 inhabitants, police said. No bodies had been recovered by nightfall. Three people were injured, and two of them were hospitalized, police told a news conference.
