Toshiba Settles Part of Suit for $23 Million

Toshiba Corp. has agreed to pay the U.S. government $23 million to settle part of a class-action suit over faulty floppy disk controllers, the U.S. Justice Department announced. Under the agreement, Tokyo-based Toshiba also will give the government $10.5 million in coupons for purchasing its products. The settlement releases Toshiba from liability under the False Claims Act for the sale of defective laptop computers to the government, the Justice Department said. This agreement is part of a $2.1-billion settlement in Beaumont, Texas, of a class-action suit that alleged the notebook-computer maker intentionally sold machines with faulty floppy disk controllers. The U.S. opted into the settlement and settled all potential government claims arising from the allegations, the Justice Department said.
