Boston Teachers OK Deal, Averting Strike

Boston’s public school teachers voted to accept a new three-year contract, averting a strike that threatened to cancel classes for 64,000 students. The new contract, approved by voice vote, gives teachers a 4% salary increase in each of the next three years, retroactive to Sept. 1. The average pay for a Boston schoolteacher was $55,942 last year. Edward Doherty, president of the 6,000-member Boston Teachers Union, said the deal was fair.
