Notre Dame’s 0-0 tie against Damien was the first time the Knights have been shut out since 1992 against Santa Margarita.

The Knights ran their first fumblerooski play since 1997 and guard Tim Volk ran 48 yards for a touchdown. But the play was wiped out by a clipping penalty.

Notre Dame’s offense has been repeatedly disrupted by penalties.

“Sometimes it’s [lack of] discipline and sometimes it’s trying too hard,” Coach Kevin Rooney said.

Alemany’s 19-7 victory over Canyon was great news for first-year Coach Craig Schuler, who suspended tailback De’Andre Scott for the game because of missed practices.

Winning without Scott boosted the players’ confidence and reinforced that everyone must follow the rules.

“It was kind of vindication for the kids that they can play well without [Scott],” Schuler said.

Crespi (0-5) continues to struggle, but senior receiver-free safety Larry Viltz hasn’t let up. He had three interceptions and caught four passes for 62 yards Friday against Crenshaw.
