A park known to residents for years as the Vaqueros, or Cowboys, Park for its western town motif will undergo a complete renovation beginning in November.
The changes will include demolishing the remaining fort-like wooden and stone structures of what was once a small western town for kids to play in, complete with a sheriff’s jail that local kids called “the castle.”
The renovation will also bring about new playground equipment and surfacing, expanded picnic areas and a new irrigation system and landscaping.
On Tuesday, council members voted to award the $221,147 renovation contract to Pima Corp. The park on North Carlsbad Street, was opened in 1965. The future larger playground area will accommodate children as old as 12 and all areas will be made accessible to those with disabilities.
