University Rallies to Defeat South Gate
University erased a 14 point, third-quarter deficit, rallying to defeat South Gate, 76-75, in the second round of the Pacifica boys’ basketball tournament Wednesday at Pacifica High.
Trailing 59-45 with three minutes to play in the third period, the Trojans (1-1) rallied and took their first lead of the game on David Feistel’s free throw with 14 seconds to play.
Senior guard Jason Garey made six three-pointers and had a game-high 23 points and University’s Hiro Christoph added 15.
In other tournament games:
Artesia 57, Edison 54--Artesia escaped with a victory when Edison’s three-point attempt at the buzzer glanced off the rim. Malcolm Herron led Artesia (2-0) with 20 points. Kyle McCarter scored 19 points for Edison (1-1).
In the Coyote Classic:
Kennedy 59, Saddleback 39--Rhema McKnight and Steven Kim had 11 points each for the Fighting Irish (2-0).
Ismael Isais scored 14 points for Saddleback (1-2).
In the Reebok/Diablo Inferno tournament:
San Clemente 82, Bolsa Grande 53--James Hartman had 17 points, Matt King 14, Jordan Fleener 12 and Curtis Bush had 10 points for San Clemente (2-0), which faces Foothill Friday in the last round of pool play.
Omar Amaral had 27 points for Bolsa Grande (0-2).
Mission Viejo 72, San Pedro 54--Travis Niesen had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Mission Viejo (2-0). Greg Villanuva had 15 points for the Diablos.
In the Taco Company Invitational:
Anaheim 69, Orange 48--Senior guard Quinn Hawking scored a game-high 33 points for the Colonists (1-1) in the second round of the consolation bracket. Senior guard Brandon Clark scored 23 points for Orange (0-2).
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Tarbut V’ Torah 72, Long Beach Zinsmeyer 43--Geoff Keith had 25 points and Noam Dashti had 20 points and 18 rebounds for host Tarbut V’ Torah (2-0).
In the Century girls’ tournament:
Santa Ana Valley 54, Alhambra 25--Crystal Davis had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Carina Martinez had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Santa Ana Valley (2-0), in a pool-play game. Monique Cruz had eight assists for the Falcons.
In the Hacienda Heights Wilson Tournament:
San Marino 55, Whittier Christian 49--Lindsey Shiomi had 20 points and five assists for Whittier Christian (0-1). Venessa Zamorano had 12 rebounds for the Heralds.
In the Woodbridge tournament:
Capistrano Valley 56, Riverside North 35--Senior guard Lindsay Peloza scored a game-high 25 points and sophomore forward Hallie Steube added 17 for the Cougars (1-1).
