Jason Collins tied his career-high with 19 points, and twin Jarron added 12 points and 12 rebounds as No. 4 Stanford routed UC Riverside, 84-41, Wednesday night at Palo Alto.
Playing in a half-full Maples Pavilion, the Cardinal was never tested in its first game since winning the Puerto Rico Shootout.
“This is a tough situation for Riverside because we’re awfully big,” Coach Mike Montgomery said. “It was really tough for them to get a good shot off against us.”
Jason Collins played 25 minutes and had 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
“It’s just showing that I’ve been putting in a lot of hard work,” he said. “Guys were looking for me in the paint. I was getting a lot of offensive rebounds and trying to put them back.”
Stanford (5-0) took a 14-3 lead in the first five minutes, led by 20 points a few minutes later and didn’t let the lead drop below 28 points in the second half. The Cardinal never trailed in running its home nonconference record to 31-1 since 1995 and beating the Highlanders (1-4) for the fourth consecutive time.
Mike McDonald had 12 points for Stanford, and reserve Teyo Johnson added 11 as the Cardinal outrebounded the Highlanders, 47-26.
Jason Labagh and Aaron Hands each had six points to lead Riverside.
“Stanford was even better than we expected them to be,” Riverside Coach John Masi said. “They do not have any weaknesses. They’ve got people who can score from any spot on the court, and they have backups everywhere.”
Stanford plays at Long Beach State on Saturday night.
San Diego 63, UC Irvine 60--Guard Dana White scored 13 points at the Bren Center to lead the Toreros to their fifth consecutive victory over the Anteaters.
Forward Cameron Rigby and center Tyler Field added 10 points each for San Diego (4-1), which has won three consecutive games.
Forward Ben Jones of Irvine (2-1) scored 19 points and reserve center J.R. Christ had 15 points on six-of-nine shooting.
Irvine closed to 61-60 on a basket by Christ with 1:25 to go before White added a free throw. The Anteaters’ Jerry Green then collided with Christ before missing a jump shot that could have tied the score.
