* Pitcher Melissa Coogan of El Camino Real has made a commitment to play at Hawaii.
Coogan, who was 20-4 with a 0.37 earned run average and batted .424 with 35 runs batted in, also considered San Luis Obispo and Long Island.
* First baseman Jennifer Dilley of Newbury Park has committed to play at Western Michigan.
BASKETBALL
* Frank Robinson, a transfer from Littlerock, lost his appeal to gain varsity eligibility at Chatsworth. He can play only on junior varsity this season.
* Crespi will open its basketball practice Friday with midnight madness festivities that include the Laker Girls and a $100 half-court shot competition.
Activities begin at 10 p.m.
FOOTBALL
* The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Pacific Bell and UCLA are sponsoring a kick, pass and punt competition for boys and girls 7-15 on Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon at Northridge Park.
Finalists will compete before the USC-UCLA game Nov. 18 at the Rose Bowl. Former UCLA players will provide skills training and tips. The event is free.
GOLF
* Susie Maxwell Berning, three-time U.S. Women’s Open champion, will teach at a two-day school for women on Saturday and Sunday at Moorpark College.

* Rob Bernardi, a 1977 graduate of Monroe High, has been named athletic director at Nicholls State in Thibodeaux, La.
