Sea Otters Needed
* Thanks very much for the enlightening (and frightening) Column One article by Marla Cone on the Aleutian Islands’ ecological distress (Oct. 28).
Her analysis of the food chain disruption because of a lack of sea otters to feed on urchins that have now decimated the kelp forests can also apply to our own situation off the Southern California coast. We need to encourage and welcome the California sea otter to our local waters in hopes that its preying on sea urchins will once again allow our kelp forests to be restored and thrive.
