There’s No Quit (or W) in Clippers
Stanford (3-5, 2-3) at UCLA (5-3, 2-3)
* Kickoff: 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rose Bowl, Channel 9.
* Story line: Two unranked teams play with bowl implications on the line. A UCLA victory gives the Bruins the six victories required for bowl consideration and, given the strength of the Pacific 10 Conference, virtually guarantees a bowl bid. Stanford must win this game, and its two other remaining games, to become eligible for a bowl game.
* UCLA update: Tailback DeShaun Foster rushed for 187 and 140 yards in the season’s first two games but hasn’t topped 100 yards since. He missed one game because of a broken right hand and has played the last two with the hand in a wrapped splint, and the Bruins hope he’s ready to rejoin the 100-yard club this week.
* Stanford update: The Cardinal has scored the fewest points of any Pac-10 team, but don’t be fooled: In five games started by quarterback Randy Fasani, Stanford is averaging 27.6 points. In the three games Fasani missed because of a knee injury, Stanford averaged 7.6 points.
* Edge to UCLA: This won’t be a blowout, but the Bruins will win, sending Stanford from Rose Bowl one year to no bowl the next.
* Line: UCLA by 8.
