Irvine Swimmers Host Big West Shootout Meet

The UC Irvine Big West Shootout begins at 1 p.m. Friday with two men’s and women’s four-way swim meets.
Irvine takes on Pacific, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara, while Washington, Brigham Young, Air Force and Cal State Northridge swim against each other. Championship and consolation team competitions begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
VOLLEYBALL
Irvine’s Jody Carlson, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, committed to play women’s volleyball at Loyola Marymount, Irvine Coach Mark Mednick said.
Carlson was a first-team all-league selection last season and is a three-year starter for the Vaqueros, ranked third in both the county and Division I-A.
* Monique Kettler, a 6-foot middle blocker from St. Margaret’s High, has committed to play women’s volleyball at Portland, St. Margaret’s Coach Susie Maga said. Kettler helped the Tartans win the Southern Section Division V-AA title last season.
BASKETBALL
A Southern Section hearing committee will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday to hear an appeal on behalf of basketball player Martin Iti, whose athletic suspension by Villa Park Principal Fran Roney was upheld Tuesday by section commissioner James Staunton.
The committee will be comprised of current or former section executive committee members. If it too rules against Iti, he can appeal at the state level.
SOFTBALL
Outfielder Kim Miller of Valencia High has committed to play softball at Louisville, Valencia Coach John German said. Miller is a three-time All-Orange League selection.
