Orange Lutheran’s Whieldon to Play Football at Saddleback
Orange Lutheran two-sport standout Jason Whieldon has decided to attend Saddleback College to play football, Lancer boys’ basketball Coach Shawn Cassidy said Thursday.
Whieldon, The Times’ Orange County back of the year, completed 65% of his passes last season for 2,844 yards, with a county-record 40 touchdowns and only six interceptions.
He also was a first-team selection in basketball, averaging 26.4 points and six rebounds.
Whieldon visited several Division I schools but received no scholarship offers. Cassidy said Whieldon still could attend a Division I school if one makes an offer.
BASKETBALL
Villa Park girls’ basketball Coach Joni Davis has resigned, Spartan girls’ Athletic Director Mark McMahon said.
Davis, who had a two-year record of 30-26, was a walk-on coach and often had scheduling conflicts between practices and her job as a personal trainer, McMahon said.
* Richard Bossenmeyer is expected to be named boys’ basketball coach at Tustin High. The announcement was supposed to be made this week, but it has been held up until the school board gives its approval April 10.
Bossenmeyer, 34, compiled a 90-59 record at Orange High in the early and mid-1990s before becoming an assistant at Chapman and Cal State Fullerton.
* Los Alamitos High will interview 10 candidates Saturday for its vacant boys’ basketball position. Griffin vice principal Jerry Halpin said a decision is expected by April 14. Mentioned among possible finalists is Foothill Coach Bob Thate.
