Court Date Is Set in Molestation Case

A May 31 trial date was set Monday for Kevin Wright Carney, a retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeant and former Palmdale city councilman who is accused of molesting four Antelope Valley girls.
If convicted, Carney, 48, faces life in prison. He is being held at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles in lieu of $1 million bail, pending trial on 18 counts of continuous sexual abuse, unlawful sexual intercourse, oral copulation and possession of child pornography.
Investigators arrested Carney on Oct. 29 when a 14-year-old girl, a friend of the Carney family, told Lancaster sheriff’s officials that Carney had molested her. Carney was elected to the Palmdale City Council four days later.
Some charges filed in January cover alleged incidents that involve the 14-year-old girl, two girls ages 7 and 8, and a fourth girl who was younger than 14. Authorities allege that Carney had been molesting some of the girls since 1990.
Early this year Carney pleaded not guilty to 17 felony counts of child molestation and one misdemeanor count of possessing child pornography.
A 23-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, Carney has retired from the department and resigned from the City Council.
